The illustrated man book6/29/2023 The wicked young-old witch's sign had advertised "Skin Illustration", and, in 1900, at the age of twenty, the old man had decided to have it done in hopes of being able to find steady work as a freak attraction in various roving carnivals. The Illustrated Man is the eccentric, haunting tale of a young man's encounter, beginning on a late Wisconsin afternoon, and continuing on into the early morning dark, with a mysterious, stocky, somewhat unkempt, considerably older man who, the young man soon learns, has had his entire covering of skin tattooed. At the time of publication of The Illustrated Man, Bradbury, now an American literary icon, had produced two previous works, Dark Carnival and the now-legendary The Martian Chronicles. Some of the requisite library markings are present, as might be expected. A similar horizontal, irregular tear exists on pages 241-242, as well, which I thought best to neatly clear tape to stabilize. Pages 243-244 were previously irregularly, horizontally, practically-all-the-way-across torn, about 3/4 of the way down from top(this tear was already clear taped/repaired previously). There is light, spotty foxing observed on some pages, the body of which shows some quite modest yellowing. This rebound ex-library, 5" X 7 3/4", 251-page, First Edition offering is in G+ condition. The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury was published by Doubleday & Company, Inc., Garden City, New York, in 1951.

Janet Adam Smith continued to write and to edit. In 1945 the family moved to London, where Roberts had become Principal of the College of St Mark and St John, in Chelsea. When she went to say goodbye formally to the Director-General, Reith revealed that he had personally overruled the recommendation that stood against her name: "No increase - leaving". To her surprise she found that her salary had been put up from pounds 550 to pounds 650. She resigned, early in April, a couple of weeks after the annual pay increases were announced. This meant her relinquishing her job as Assistant Editor of The Listener. They married in 1935 and moved to Newcastle upon Tyne, where he taught mathematics at the Royal Grammar School. With a common interest in both poetry and mountaineering Roberts was soon a frequent guest at the parties for young intellectuals Adam Smith often gave. Indeed the BBC's Yearbook for 1930 has a photograph of her high in the Alps with the Matterhorn behind her and a copy of The Listener in her hand. Janet Adam Smith had been properly instructed in mountaineering by her father. Roberts, schoolmaster, poet and keen mountaineer, applied to review books for The Listener.
